SAP becomes a payment provider inside its own ERP

SAP Pay moves invoice payment and reconciliation into SAP Cloud ERP. The bank file is no longer the only path.

What happened

SAP announced SAP Pay on October 12, 2026. The service embeds payment execution in SAP Cloud ERP. SAP runs it through Tereina, a wholly owned subsidiary set up this year as a regulated payment-service provider. SAP Pay supports EFT, wire transfers, checks, and stablecoin-based settlement for cross-border payments. It is generally available in the United States and the United Kingdom. SAP also expanded its Joule Assistants, with Governance and International Trade Assistants due for general availability in the fourth quarter of 2026.

What it means

Until now, the ERP approved the invoice and something else moved the money. That handoff meant payment files, bank portals, middleware, and a reconciliation step after the fact. SAP now sits on both sides of the handoff. With a regulated payments subsidiary, payments become a product SAP sells, not only a file SAP exports. The approval record and the payment record can live in one system.

Why it matters to you

AP leaders spend effort on the seams: file formats, bank connections, and matching cleared payments back to invoices. Embedded payments remove seams when they work. They also concentrate risk. Your ERP vendor becomes your payment provider, so outages, fees, and compliance questions land with one counterparty. Treasury also gets a stablecoin option inside the ERP, which needs a policy decision before anyone turns it on.

What to watch

The Governance and International Trade Assistants are due for general availability in the fourth quarter of 2026. Watch for SAP Pay beyond the United States and the United Kingdom. Watch how much payment volume moves from bank portals into SAP, and whether other ERP vendors set up regulated payment arms of their own.
