Visa and Revolut run France's first live AI-initiated card payment
A Visa test agent paid with a real Revolut card and passed Europe's strong authentication rules with a passkey.
What happened
Revolut and Visa announced on September 7, 2026 the first secure, live payment initiated by an AI agent in France. A French Revolut consumer card paid Cleverbridge in a real transaction. Visa’s test agent, My Agent, started the payment, and Visa Payment Passkey authenticated it. Visa says the passkey met European strong customer authentication rules. The test ran on Visa Intelligent Commerce and existing European merchant systems, as part of Visa’s Agentic Ready program.
What it means
In Europe, an agent payment must satisfy strong customer authentication. A passkey does that within today’s rules, with no new regulation needed. Consumers come first here. The same building blocks carry over to business payments, as Visa’s October B2B pilot with BILL and Billtrust shows. Visa says the test ran on existing European merchant systems. Merchants did not need a new checkout to accept it.
Why it matters to you
Merchants and AR teams selling into Europe will see agent-initiated card payments that carry full authentication. Authentication evidence matters most when a payment is disputed. The card networks are building agent payments on the controls banks already trust, such as passkeys and tokenized cards. That lowers the barrier for issuers to say yes.
