Billtrust is an accounts receivable platform vendor built around invoice delivery at scale and the Business Payments Network (BPN), a supplier-side virtual-card acceptance network distributed through Visa, U.S. Bank and KeyBank. Founded in 2001 by Flint Lane, it is now headquartered in Nashville, TN. EQT (fund EQT X) took it private on December 16, 2022 at $9.50 per share, about $1.7B equity value, so the hold is in year 3.5 (High).

Revenue is about $200M (Payments Dive, December 2025) (Medium). Headcount is about 800 (Medium). It claims 2,600+ customers, $1T+ invoiced annually, 13M+ buyers and 200+ connectors (vendor claim). CEO Grant Halloran joined in December 2025.

As of 2026-10-18 it opened a Hyderabad global capability centre on 2026-09-28 (₹450 crore over three years, 100 employees in six months, 1,000 target per UNI). Nucleus placed it as a 2026 Leader. The read: a network-backed incumbent strongest in distribution and building materials, shipping AI fast on a slow-growing base.

What does it sell?

  • Invoicing and e-invoicing: multi-channel delivery including print and AP portals, with 70+ EU e-invoicing network connections (vendor claim).
  • BPN and payments: virtual card capture, surcharging as a service, L2 and L3 card data, about 2% effective card rate (vendor claim).
  • Cash application: AI matching across sources.
  • Collections: worklists plus “Collections Agentic Procedures” (November 2025).
  • Buyer payment portal and a 13-week self-updating cash forecast (May 2026).

The target is invoice-heavy upper mid-market and enterprise, with strongholds in wholesale distribution, building materials and manufacturing. Geography is the US and EU. Pricing is quote only. A third-party benchmark (Transformance citing Gartner) puts enterprise AR platform TCO at $75K to $500K+ per year (Medium, the source is a competitor).

What does it ship for AI agents?

Shipped: Collections Agentic Procedures (November 2025), which sequence risk-based outreach from network-wide data, and an MCP server (July 2026) that puts AR data inside Claude and Microsoft Copilot. The MCP server is read-only at launch, and the “first AR platform” claim rests on that read-only launch (High). Announced but not shipped: MCP write actions. On October 20, 2026 Visa, BILL and Billtrust announced a live pilot (vendor claim). In it, BILL’s payment agent pays approved supplier invoices by card through Billtrust portals without a shared login (vendor claim). The brief Can an AI Agent Pay a Supplier Invoice Through a Portal? sets out the conditions.

What does a buyer need to check?

  • Reviews: G2 4.4 on about 500 to 600 reviews, G2 AR Automation Grid Leader for 21 consecutive quarters. Glassdoor 3.3. The top complaint is implementation length (3 to 6 months) and cost surprises: separate services, annual escalators, extra charges for buyer-adoption campaigns and premium support (rfp.wiki review synthesis, 2026).
  • Reviews also report that collections escalation needs support tickets, dispute and deduction handling is immature, and cash-application matching degrades on messy remittance.
  • Payments: BPN is a US card-acceptance network. “International payment options” arrived only in May 2026, and the last disclosed BPN volume figure is the 2022 $100B milestone.
  • Ownership: two CEO changes with an unexplained four-month vacancy in 2025, plus layoff reports from employee forums with no WARN filings (Medium).
