Sovos sells tax determination, e-invoicing, filing, and regulatory reporting to multinationals and to software vendors that embed it. It claims 100,000+ customers, including half the Fortune 500, and 70B+ transactions a year (High, self-reported). Hg has backed Sovos since 2016 and led a majority investment in 2020, with TA Associates as a minority investor (High). Revenue and total headcount are not published. The bottom line is that Sovos is the e-invoicing mandate specialist, now pitching itself as an agentic tax compliance company.
The company calls its platform Agentic Compliant Finance. It says it has worked in tax compliance since 1979 and employs 150+ tax experts (High, self-reported). Its figures carry an as-of date of September 1, 2026, and Sovos notes that coverage depth differs by product.
What does it sell?
VAT and GST determination covers 185+ countries and territories. E-invoicing and continuous transaction controls cover 60+. Sales and use tax determination and filing cover only the United States and Canada (High, company figures). US information reporting covers 1099 and 1095 forms.
Compliance Network, generally available since June 2, 2026, runs e-invoicing across countries from one platform (High). Sovos holds Plateforme Agréée status in France and has completed interoperability testing with the French public portal. It also offers SAP-certified products and added APAC coverage through the IRIS acquisition in August 2025 (High). Pricing is not public.
What does it ship for AI agents?
Shipped: Sovi AI expanded on March 24, 2026, with Ask Sovi for regulatory questions and error diagnosis features (High). Sovos announced MCP and Agent-to-Agent support in the same release. Fixes run only after a Sovos user approves them, and every action is logged. Sovos Intelligence, a reconciliation engine across e-invoices, VAT returns, and SAF-T filings, reached global availability in 2026 (Medium).
Absent: a clear line between shipped and planned. The Sovi AI release lists “current and planned” capabilities together, and guided actions inside the platform are planned (High). Buyers cannot tell from the release which items run today.
What does a buyer need to check?
US sales tax is not the core. Determination and filing cover only the US and Canada, while Sovos’s depth sits in VAT, e-invoicing, and reporting. Buyers who sell mainly in the US must compare it directly with Avalara and Anrok. Sovos publishes its own comparison against Avalara, which is vendor-sourced.
Scale numbers move between sources. Hg’s 2026 post cites more than 50 billion transactions a year, while Sovos’s numbers page says 70B+ as of September 2026 (Medium). Named results come from Philips, Nationwide, and Ashland, each attributed to that customer. Sovos says those results are not typical outcomes.
