What is Assist, Automate, Advise, Configure?

Four categories of AI agents in finance, where Assist helps people do tasks, Automate completes routine tasks end to end, Advise recommends actions nobody was looking for, and Configure changes the systems and processes themselves.

How does it work?

Each category needs its own architecture, so an Assist agent cannot simply be upgraded into an Advise agent. Assist is built around human workflows with narrow context. Automate needs decision authority, clear boundaries, exception handling, and audit trails. Advise needs broad analytical data, and Configure needs permission to modify systems.

Where does the human gate sit?

With Assist, the human reviews and sends, and stays in control of every decision. With Automate, the human sets the parameters and handles edge cases, and no human sits in the routine path. Configure needs a governance model that most enterprises do not have.

What does it change for the team?

Assist leaves the human bottleneck in place and only makes it a bit faster. The essay tells teams to match the category to the problem. Use Assist for speed on judgment tasks, Automate for capacity on tasks without judgment, Advise for attention across large datasets, and Configure for bandwidth to keep improving systems.
