What is a document agent?

An invoice or contract treated as an agent that knows its own situation, holds goals, senses events around it, and decides what to do next, instead of sitting as a passive data record.

How does it work?

It has four parts. They are identity and state, goals and priorities, perception and triggers, and decision and action. It runs a loop to observe, orient, decide, act, and update, and it wakes when something meaningful changes, not on a schedule. Invoices for the same customer coordinate, so one takes the lead on communication while the others wait.

Where does the human gate sit?

Routine collection work, like a reminder on day 7, needs no human. When a signal changes everything, such as a customer’s CFO calling about cash flow problems, the agent pauses and escalates for human guidance. A contract agent can invoke remedies on its own or recommend them to human decision-makers.

What does it change for the team?

The agent handles the routine so people focus on the exceptional. It also has to spot the exceptional when it shows up. It does not replace human judgment. It surfaces the moments that need it.
