What is remittance?
The note that travels with a payment and says which invoices it pays, how much goes to each, and why any amount is short.
How does it work?
A remittance can be a line on a bank statement, an email, a PDF, or a spreadsheet. It can also be a page in a customer portal or a structured record on a payment rail. Its quality decides how hard cash application is. A clean remittance names every invoice and the amount paid against it. A poor one names a total and nothing else.
Why does it matter for agents?
An agent applying cash starts from the remittance. The essay’s rule is that the agent can apply the paid portion and code the reason only when the remittance states it. When the remittance is missing or vague, the agent assembles the candidate invoices and payer history and hands the case to a person.
What does a buyer need to check?
The AR Automation Market 2026 study on this site records one practitioner’s advice to vendors who claim automated matching. Run your fifty ugliest real remittances through the demo before you buy.
