What is cash application?
The work of matching money that arrives to the invoices it pays, and posting the match to the ledger.
How does it work?
A payment lands in a bank account. A remittance says which invoices it covers, or it does not. Cash application reads the payment and the remittance, finds the open invoices, and posts the match. When the amount matches exactly, the invoice closes. When it is short, long, or names invoices that do not exist, someone has to decide what happened.
Why does it matter for agents?
It is the AR job where AI pays off first, because the inputs are documents and the output is a posting that can be checked. The essay sets the rules for an agent that does this work. It proposes a match and validates it against rules the team wrote down. Then it posts to the ERP as the system of record and logs the evidence. It never keeps a private ledger.
Where does the human gate sit?
Below a confidence floor the agent does not post. It assembles the case and escalates. Short pays, deductions, and unknown payers go to a person. The agent never writes off a balance and never guesses a customer.
