What is an AI cash application agent?

An AI agent that matches remittance to open items and posts to the ERP when the match clears rules set in advance, and sends everything outside those rules to a person.

How does it work?

The chain runs in order. Capture the remittance, propose the match, check it against deterministic rules, post to the ERP as the system of record, and log the evidence. Each post shows the remittance, the customer, the invoices, and the rule that cleared it. The agent gets no private ledger.

Where does the human gate sit?

The clean class posts with no person involved. That class is an exact amount, a confirmed customer, and invoice references the agent can show. Amounts outside tolerance, short pay residuals, deductions, unidentified payers, and matches below the confidence floor go to a person. The agent never writes off a balance and never accepts a deduction claim.

What does it change for the team?

The team moves to exceptions, deductions, and payer cleanup while the agent takes the clean posts. Rollout starts in shadow mode, where the agent proposes and a person posts. The class the agent can post widens only while reversals of its posts stay low.
