What is close readiness?

How far the books are from being closeable for a period: which reconciliations are done, which exceptions are still open, and what still needs review and sign-off.

How does it work?

Close readiness is a queue of exceptions. Reconciliations, unmatched items, variances and pending entries are worked down until a controller can sign. Oracle’s Ledger agent, announced October 26, 2026, works large volumes of entries to improve close readiness, reconciles, and keeps its arithmetic in deterministic code. Microsoft’s Account Reconciliation Agent in Dynamics 365 will resolve exceptions in bulk, with limits and notifications. OpenAI’s finance team has set a “zero-day close” goal, and its CFO writes that the team is still building toward it.

Why does it matter in finance ops?

A person accepts each action. It cites a Microsoft partner’s expectation, not yet a measured result, that reconciliation moves into the month, leaving the close window for review and sign-off. The OpenAI CFO brief lists close metrics to baseline before an agent goes live: cycle time, the share of transactions reconciled automatically, exceptions needing review, and time to explain a variance.
