What is usage-based billing?

Charging a customer for what it consumed in a period, measured by meters, rather than a flat fee per seat or per month.

How does it work?

The product emits events. A metering layer counts them against a definition such as API calls, tokens, gigabytes or minutes. A rating layer applies the price, often in tiers. The invoice is built from the result at the end of the period. Prepaid credits, commitments and overages sit on top.

Why does it matter in this market?

AI products are priced this way almost by default, which made the independent usage-billing engines targets. The acquisitions essay records that Stripe bought Metronome, Adyen bought Orb, Salesforce bought m3ter and Intuit agreed to buy Sequence inside one year. The deal tracker on this site lists each one with its source.

What changes for the team?

Billing stops being a configuration task done once and becomes a product surface that changes with every pricing experiment. The essay on billing setup moving into the coding tool follows where that work now gets done.
